We’re well versed in the spate of small bar openings that have taken over Sydney and other capital cities (yes Melbourne, you did it first) but there isn’t a lot we hear about the trend flowering beyond the major cities.
Sure, there’s Goldfish in the Hunter Valley. Now, thanks to the arrival of Fox Bar in Maitland there are the nascent beginnings of a Hunter Valley small bar tour – though someone is going to have to drive.
Maitland has its fair share of watering holes mind you, it’s just that they tend to be of the big box kind, so Fox Bar offers some welcome variety. And in what seems to be a growing trend, Fox Bar stocks only homegrown brews, offering a dozen craft beers from throughout the country and a trio of ciders. Classic cocktails are the order here too, with non-drivers being able to fortify themselves for the journey ahead with a Manhattan or Negroni.
Next time you’re road-tripping along the Pacific Highway past Newcastle, do yourself a favour and head inland 20kms or so to Fox Bar — give the Maccas at Raymond Terrace a miss.
