Step inside Goros, a new izakaya dive in Sydney

What do you get when you take a Surry Hills pub and turn it Japanese?

You get Goros.

Goros opened late last year on Mary Street in Surry Hills, and has been attracting punters with its take on Japanese drinking and eats. Drawing heavily on the izakayas of Tokyo for inspiration, Goros has a good, informative sake list that takes care of the uninitiated (it breaks it down into easily understood categories right there on the menu — something we’d like to see more of with sake), and a short, sharp cocktail list that throws Japanese ingredients into the mix with more familiar spirits. The Margarita, for instance, gets a workover and becomes the Sanchez does Tokyo with tequila and lime being joined by ume-shu and a wasabi salt rim.

And does 2am Ramen — a dish on Goros late night menu — sound like a good idea to you? It does to us, as does the yakitori — it’s good boozing food. And we can see plenty of that getting dished up to Sydney hospo staff, because Goros is open until 3am and sits neatly outside of the lockout zone.
