Heya is the latest bar from the team that brought you the very fine drinking hole that is The Gresham, in Brisbane’s CBD.

The bar is more than just a bar — it’s more like five bars in one.

“Heya was inspired by a night we spent bar-hopping through the alleyways of the Golden Gai in Shinjuku, Tokyo, where there are hundreds of small specialised bars,” said the owners Andrew Baturo, Denis Sheahan, and Paul Piticco.

The subterranean bar is home to two kitchens pumping out pan-Asian street food, and the drinks in each of the bars range from sake to whisky (if you can find it, they’ve got a hidden whisky den that accommodates just eight people — given the whiskey know-how at The Gresham, this is an option you’ll want to take up).

They’ve also got a space for live music. It all hones a very Lost in Translation kind of vibe: all that’s missing is Bill Murray and some drunken karaoke antics.
