Here’s three ways to make hot drinks

The time for hot drinks is here.

Few people can doubt the restorative feeling you’ll get on a cold winter’s night warming your hands — and your insides — with a well made, hot, cocktail.

For the Threeway this month, we’ve delved into the archives to find you a few of our favourite winter warmer recipes.

A Hot Milk Punch is a fine, comforting way to get your rum and cognac fix during winter; Glogg, if you’ve not had it, is Scandanavian mulled wine, and a great use for akvavit; the Blistering Banksy, by Greg Sanderson, was a great drink which won him the Bartender of the Year in 2012.

Hot Milk Punch

40ml Hine VSOP
20ml Angostura 5 Years Old
Hot milk to top.
Grated nutmeg to garnish.

Add the cognac and the rum to a rocks glass. Add frothy, steamed milk to top, garnish with nutmeg.

Blistering Banksy

45ml scotch whisky
15ml wattle toffee liqueur
10ml dry manzanilla sherry
2 barspoons of mead

Mix all ingredients in a tempered tumbler. Set alight and slowly pour from one vessel to the other. Once the liquid is sufficiently heated, extinguish the flame by placing one cup on top of the other. Pour into a brandy balloon garnished with a toasted sesame rim.

Glogg

1.5 litres of red wine
150g molasses
20g cinnamon sticks
20g whole allspice
Small knob of ginger sliced
20 grams of whole cloves
10g whole cardamom
500ml dark rum
200ml taffel akvavit
Zest of 1 orange
4 cups of raisins
100 grams almonds
500ml tawny port

The day before, steep the raisins in the port in a large jar and leave overnight.

In a saucepan, add 500ml of the red wine and ingredients 2 – 7. Heat until just before boiling, then allow to steep til the mixture returns to room temperature.

Add the wine mixture to a large pot, then add the remaining wine, rum, akvavit, orange zest, and orange juice. Warm to approximately 80 degrees Celsius, being careful not to boil to avoid burning off the alcohol.

Add the port and raisins, and almonds, stirring through the warm mixture. Serve warm.
