As part of the City of Sydney’s ‘Laneway Revitalisation’ program October 1, 2009, till January 31, 2010, will mark ‘Laneways By George’ a public art program which amongst other things will see a bar pop up on Underwood Street in Sydney’s CBD.

The leaders of the drinks industry, both local and international, descended on Sydney for the eighth instalment of Sydney BarShow; a week of networking events creating Australia’s largest and most respected bar industry trade event!
The 2009 Australian Bartender Magazine Bartender of the Year Competition (sponsored by Club Suntory) brought out the best of Australian bartending talent in a competition that tested their knowledge of the backbar with a gruelling written exam, their ability to serve a custromer, their savvy at identifying the ingredients in a cocktail in a blind tasting and their skill at presenting and creating two signature cocktails to a panel of esteemed critics.
Russian Standard kicked off a series of nationwide launch parties with a bash at Sydney’s World Square Pub. Here are some snaps from the night…
The Mag 48 EL, creatively named after it’s ring gauge size (48 ring gauge x 4.3″), joins its regular production cousin the Mag 46 (46 x 5.6″) gauge and its 2005 Edicion Limitada brother the Mag 50 (you guessed it, 50 x 6.3″), which was subsequently made into a regular production line, in the H Upmann marca.
We’ll there’s only days to go now and we’ve compiled a tidy little list for you all to sample at Sydney BarShow’s Smuggler’s Den. On top of this list there are couple more pledged bottles we’re eagerly awaiting to lay our hands on and even a shipment or two still finding their way from customs to the BarShow HQ.
The Craft programme continues to evolve and lead the bar industry in new and exciting directions.
Involvement in this year’s programme is by exclusive invitation, providing the attending guests with access to some of the industry’s leading identities.
Ok so this isn’t really a cocktail story, but the ‘coconut crazed cowboys’ that are Tha Colada Club and the cats that bought you Rematch Beeyatch are presenting a evening of classic cocktail madness at Sydney’s Victoria Room with the “Coney Island Bartender Bumfight”.
Alchemists, and Behind Bars consultants Marco Nunes (QLD), Sean Baxter (VIC) and David Beatty (NSW) have recently been appointed as the 2009 Smirnoff Black Copper Cup ambassadors. All previous competitors in this challenging competition, theses ambassadors will provide mentorship to Copper Cup entrants in their state.
You can also think about giving money to that homeless guy that you pass on the street every day. And if you do that, do yourself a big favor–look into his eyes and ask him how he’s doing. Then wait, and actually listen to his answer. You might be surprised at how rewarding this can be.
Sven Almenning, Director of Behind Bars, will receive the Outstanding Contribution award at the Bartender Magazine Australian Bar Awards next Wednesday, 23 September. So before he takes the stage next week we thought we would give you a little insight into Sven’s career and how he went from Norwegian Naval Officer to the Company Director of Behind Bars.
