Opened in June this year following a swanky $2m revamp of the former Tattershall’s Hotel, Ruby L’otel offers something quite different to the Rozelle pub market. From Matt O’Neill and the founders of SumoSalad, James Miller and Luke Baylis, the venue pulls off the perfect mix of old and new with the public bar retaining a traditional feel and the huge beer garden providing a real wow factor.

Designed by Annie Snell, the beer garden is not only a great feature but also delivers a comfortable outdoor setting for customers to enjoy food and drinks and can cater for up to 200 making it the ideal place for summer parties.  Head Chef, Damien Monley (who trained for four years under Matt Moran) provides a great mix of Asian-style tapas and yum cha dishes including twice-cooked, crispy five-spiced pork with chilli jam, coconut and lime and traditional hand made dumplings. The drinks include a refreshing cocktail list including Buddha’s Kiss – a fresh mix of guava nectar muddled with rum and sugar and topped with sparkling brut – along with a healthy choice of wine and beer.

So far the venue is attracting a mix of locals from the Rozelle and Balmain suburbs as well as a young crowd brave enough to venture out from the nearby city. Ruby L’otel looks like it’ll prove to be a great place to while away the summer.
