While the Berkelouw family established their rare and antique bookstore in 1812, the first new, second hand and rare books retail business opened on Oxford Street, Paddington in Sydney in the early 1990’s. The Paddington shop became a Sydney arts and literary institution and to keep the those skiving wearing types flocking to the stores it began serving fresh coffee in store. This unique book and coffee concept proved to be a winner with the Berkelouw empire now spanning over 11 locations in 3 different states.
The Berkelouw Wine Bar is the logical and financially sound next step in the evolution of this lifestyle-orientated family owned company. Berkelouw Wine Bar aims “to create a relaxed meeting place where you can appreciate the best of what life has to offer – live music, wine and delicate tasting plates” explains co-owner Gary Mullins. The venue offers an experience for those seeking nourishment for both the palate and the mind. Plans are already underway to expand the Wine Bar concept to Berkelouw Books stores around the country.
Ex-president of the AHA New South Wales, John Thorpe, would be very disappointed; apparently Melbourne isn’t alone in being “a land of skivvy-wearing, chardonnay-drinking book readers”. Yay for Sydney!
