Do you kopstootje? Bols Genever launches

There’s been a big gin boom in this country of late, but up until now genever — the Dutch precursor to gin — has been a bit tricky to get a hold of.

Well, that’s changed with the Australian launch of Bols Genever last week at Sydney bar, The Barber Shop, which was transformed into a taste of Amsterdam for the night.

On hand for the launch was Lucas Bols’ commercial director, Guenael Fily, who got to see first hand the Imperial Gin Fizz cocktails — authentically made with Bols genever, of course — being cranked (quite literally) out by Jason Crawley’s cocktailian contraption, Crawley’s Imperial Shaker. Guests were also invited to indulge in the Kopstootje-Slurp bar — which involved the Dutch practice of the slurping your genever with your hands behind your back.

Bols Genever is triple-distilled from a mash of corn, rye and wheat and combined with a botanical distillate — it’s a complex, flavourful white spirit, and at its 42 per cent alcohol level, is perfect for mixing. If you haven’t tried a Genever Crusta (Bols Genever, Bols triple sec, lemon juice and Angostura Bitters) you’re missing out — it’s a great way to get to know genever.
