Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky has officially landed in Australia, thanks to Asahi Premium Beverages.
What is it? Well, the clue is in the name: Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky is a unique Japanese whisky from the Nikka distillery, and is distilled from a base of mostly corn in a Coffey still before being aged in American oak casks. The whisky has made waves since it was first launched, says Nikka International Business Development Representative, Naoki Tomoyoshi.
“We have a very rare still which produces an incredible liquid. We think Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky was a breakthrough product for the grain whisky category when it was first introduced in 2012.”
Here’s what they say about the release:
“Featuring aromas of vanilla, coconut and tropical fruits, Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky offers a rich, soft, sweet flavour and delicate finish, earning it a Gold Award at the 2013 International Spirits Challenge. Owing to the delicate flavours, Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky is the perfect option for both whisky connoisseurs and novices alike.”
It’s the first release of three in the Nikka Coffey range, with the Nikka Coffey Gin and and Coffey Vodka on their way as well.
Nikka is home to two Coffey stills that have been in operation since the 1960’s; the Coffey still, in case you didn’t know, was invited by Irishman Aeneas Coffey back in the 1830’s and is known for producing rounder, more approachable whiskies — and this one in particular will be well-suited for mixing.
