Go inside Guadalajara’s El Gallo Altanero

El Gallo Altanero
Calle Marsella 126, Lafayette, Guadalajara Mexico

Every now and then we get to discover a great bar in a place we least expect it, and this one — El Gallo Altanero in Guadalajar, Mexico, — is one such bar.

Owned by Aussie Nick Reed (whom you may know as the co-owner of Tromba Tequila) and run by Alan Mulvihill (who made a name for himself at Thomas Olive in Melbourne) and Amelia Boot (ex-Bad Frankie), this bar is a must-visit on any trip to Mexico’s second largest city.

You enter via a cafe downstairs called Fitzroy, then ascend the stairs in the open courtyard to the bar. Here, they change their cocktail list each day depending on what they have to hand and what they feel like, and they champion independent tequila brands, something that few bars elsewhere in the city do. The best bit? You feel right at home.
