In news just in from The World’s 50 Best Bars, three Australian bars have made the list this year with Maybe Sammy coming in at number 11; an amazing achievement for the bar the was also awarded the Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award this year and The Best Bar in Australasia 2020.
The accolade has seen Maybe Sammy rise 32 places from No. 43 on last year’s list when it was also named Best Bar in Australasia by the acclaimed awarding body. It joins a number of esteemed recognitions received by the bar since opening in January 2019.
“Last year our entry into The World’s 50 Best came out of nowhere and we were shocked.” Says Maybe Sammy co-founder, Martin Hudak. “This time we knew that if we wanted to maintain the recognition, we had to push our standards even higher and keep the focus on what we do best. We are grateful and thankful for this achievement and we want to say thank you to the judges who voted for us. We also want to thank our incredible team and guests, as without them none of this would be possible.”

In 2019, only one Australian bar made the list but this year two more bars also achieved this amazing honour. In position number 28 is the tiny bar that proves size doesn’t matter – Cantina OK! also in Sydney. Congrats to Jeremy Blackwood, Alex Dowd and of course, Alex Gilmour.
And finally, the stalwart of the Aussie small bar scene and a cocktailing haven that has been home to many award-winning bartenders, Bulletin Place, also in Sydney has taken out the 39th position, just after Employees Only in New York City. Congratulations to Tim Philips, Evan Stroeve and the team at Bulletin Place.
London’s renowned Connaught Bar in the opulent Connaught Hotel took out top honours on the heels of a month-long England lockdown. The Mayfair bar has swapped places with last year’s winner, New York’s Dante, which has moved to position number two on the list.
