Yarra Falls Melbourne: Hospo industry veteran, Brendan Keown, opens 25-seat bar with a waterfall wall

Not many bars can say they have their own waterfall as their backbar, but Yarra Falls can…
Yarra Falls is a unique small bar and bistro, dishing up good food and drinks. With a strong emphasis on everything Australian and an appreciation for local land (from spirits used, to music playlists and more), this bar is bound to serve up good times.

Their seasonal array of cocktails incorporate and are garnished with Indigenous botanicals and enhance their beverage offering. Despite this being Brendan Keown’s first time owning a venue, he has successfully worked across venues such as The Baxter Inn, Restaurant Hubert and Hotel Esplanade.

“We put together the concept and ethos as part of a pitch for The Blend’s IDEALAB grant disbursement in 2020,” said Brendan. “Despite being unsuccessful there, we had a great year learning and refining our concept for a venue.” Now, despite the hiccups of COVID, the doors are open from Wednesday to Sunday each week.

The name ‘Yarra Falls’ was inspired by the long-gone waterfall that used to stretch right across the river, that marked where freshwater met the sea and had been a meeting place for many years before colonisation, and is a reminder of Melbourne’s history.

With just 25 seats this is a cosy small bar in true Melbourne style. Brendan hopes that in the near future, they will activate cultural partnerships for live music, spoken word events, screenings and more.
