Sydney’s iconic beachside suburb of Bondi welcomed newcomer Curly Lewis to the neighbourhood on Friday, 19th of August.

Located in the heart of Bondi on Campbell Parade, Curly Lewis, a working brewery, bar and diner, will be the first of its kind found on the eastern suburbs’ beaches and the first brewery bar in Bondi’s history. Born and made in Bondi, Curly Lewis is the brainchild of a group of local beer-loving mates, Adam Richards, Oliver dos Remedios, Gareth Morton, Loren Morton, and experienced brewer Scotty Morgan, who all wanted to bring a new kind of brewery experience to their own backyard, Bondi Beach.

“We felt there was a gap in the market for beer-lovers in the eastern suburbs. You have to go to the inner west or northern beaches for a brewery experience. So we wanted to change that and create a local brand and brewery in a location that has a lot of significance to us as founders.” said Oli dos Remedios, Co-founder and Head of Brand.

“We’ve been coasting around Bondi most of our lives. We grew up surfing here as kids and have always had a special connection with this place (Bondi),” Continues Adam Richards, Co-founder and Head of Operations & Finance.

Located in the heart of Bondi on Campbell Parade, Curly Lewis, a working brewery, bar and diner, will be the first of its kind found on the eastern suburbs’ beaches and the first brewery bar in Bondi’s history.

“Our family line goes back four generations in Bondi – you’ll find a few photos by the bar of our grandparents from the early ’40s as part of the Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club. Our grandparents have played a special role in our lives, so we felt it was only natural to have a spot for them in the brewery”, Said siblings and Co-founders Adam Richards & Loren Morton.

The brewery will produce two core beers, the Curly Lewis Clean Cut Lager, a crisp, smooth straight-up lager, and Bondi Hazy Ale, hazy and hoppy with tropical notes. While these two are the Curly Lewis launch beers and will be found in neighbouring bars and liquor stores around Bondi, the venue will also have a more extensive range of other varietals of beer, titled ‘wildcards’ and seltzer on offer, with a total of 20 taps. Punters can expect to see a rotating menu of beers thanks to an on-site brewing system that allows for small batch beer production, facilitating an environment for innovation and experimentation.

We are confident that our range of beer will appeal to the average Aussie classic beer drinker through to an avid craft beer lover,” says Scotty Morgan, Head Brewer who joins the team with over 20 years of brewing experience.

The venue’s stainless steel taps will be pouring the ‘always here’ core range of Curly Lewis Clean Cut Lager and Bondi Hazy Ale beers, and the remaining taps will feature rotating seasonal beers titled ‘wildcards’. Some of these ‘wildcards’ are the Salty Mermaid Gose, a light, fresh, sour and salty Gose made with a few buckets of ocean water from across the road, through to richer style beers such as the Lay Day Red IPA or the Coffee Stout, all of which are made from the on-site brewery.

“The brief for the beer was simple. We are brewing a stone’s throw from the beach – our core beers needed a clean and easy drinking approachability, made for those baking hot beach days. We are confident that our range of beer will appeal to the average Aussie classic beer drinker through to an avid craft beer lover,” says Scotty Morgan, Head Brewer who joins the team with over 20 years of brewing experience. There is also a nice collection of spirits, a handful of classic cocktails and an approachable wine list featuring other Australian-made and independently owned brands, including a few skin-contact wines.

Designed by renowned interior architects ACME (the team behind celebrated venues like Fred’s, Margaret and Archie Rose Distillery & Bar), the space is an immersive experience capturing the Bondi Beach coastal vibe. It is overlaid with a natural palette of materials reflecting its environment and the brewing process. The beer tanks are a feature, with the workings of the brewery on full display and the aroma of hops in the air. With 120 seats, patrons can experience the venue at the long timber bar as bartenders pour cold beer from the taps, in the diner where they can watch the brewing process, or relaxing outdoors, watching the surf roll in and enjoying the sea breeze.

Curly Lewis Clean-Cut Lager and Bondi Hazy Ale are already proving extremely popular with drinkers in the local community in and around Bondi. They have already swept up several awards for both the core range beers from their first award submission at the Royal Queensland Beer Awards.
