Alfie’s, the new ‘affordable’ steakhouse from Liquid & Larder, opens today

Alfie’s, the fourth venue from Liquid & Larder (Bistecca, The Gidley, The Rover), is now open. The new concept is all about offering a premium but more affordable alternative to the grand brasseries and steakhouses that populate the Sydney CBD.

“After years of perfecting the slow dining and elevated experiences at Bistecca, The Gidley and The Rover – we’re going off script at Alfie’s by offering the same high-quality food and booze but fast-paced and full of action,” says James Bradey, co-founder and director of Liquid and Larder.

Enter on Bligh Street to get a taste Alfie’s world, a restaurant and bar inspired by the underbelly of East London, complete with on-site butchery and steak-ageing facility. The unique space has been designed by Tom Mark Henry who was tasked with reinventing the idea of the decadent steakhouse into something more accessible. With UK Grime and Hip Hop belting from the speakers, the site uses utilitarian finishes with urban art to create a working-class aesthetic.

The succinct menu has been put together by executive chef Pip Pratt and head chef Matt Thomson. Sit down and order a $38, 220g Riverine sirloin, wet and dry aged on site for maximum flavour, cooked over fire on Alfie’s custom-made grill and guaranteed to be on your table within 15 minutes of ordering. Sides include Alfie’s bubble and squeak slaw, risoni, roast mushrooms, cucumber salad, potato gratin, fire-roasted baby carrots, and hot chips with chip shop curry sauce. For those willing to skip work early, there will be a first come, first served rotisserie ‘Beefetta’ special, Alfie’s take on porchetta.

And on the drinks front, you can select from an organic-leaning wine list by Group Sommelier Kyle Poole (ex-Orana) or sample some drinks from the list put together by Group Bars Manager, Alex Gondzioulis (former Bartender of the Year and World Class Australian finalist 2023).

The drinks list is all about approachable cocktails with highlights including a modern take on ‘Whiskey and Apples’, a juicy and fresh ‘Bloody Shiraz Spritz’, the ‘Fkn Diabolical’ margarita and the smashable ‘Lock Stock’. You can get all these drinks and snacks a the monochrome bar with a terrace overlooking the hustle and bustle of Bligh Street.
