The stakes have just been raised for Bartender of the Year 2026, with this year’s winner set to walk away with a prize package worth around $6,500.
Proudly sponsored by Spirits Academy, the 2026 competition will see the country’s bartenders put their knowledge, palate, technique and creativity to the test across four rounds during Sydney Bar Week.
Taking out the top spot will come with $5,000 cash, delivered via a $4,999 voucher and gold coin, alongside a bottle of Highland Park 25 Year Old and a bottle of Cointreau 700ml.
Second and third place won’t leave empty-handed either. Each will receive a $250 cash voucher, a bottle of Highland Park 18 Year Old and a bottle of Cointreau 700ml, with each prize package valued at around $600.
But first, competitors will have to earn their place at the top.
The competition begins with Round 1 – The Exam, a one-hour written test covering spirits, cocktails, technique, service and broader industry knowledge. Competitors are also encouraged to brush up on the Spirits Platform portfolio, which will feature throughout the competition, as well as previous Australian Bartender issues and last year’s exam.
From there, all entrants move into Round 2 – the Sensory Challenge, testing palate, aroma recognition, tasting ability and sensory awareness across a range of products and flavours.
Scores from the first two rounds will determine the top eight, who will move into the Mystery Challenge.
In Round 3, each of the remaining bartenders will be randomly assigned one Cointreau cocktail and one Highland Park cocktail from a set list, with judges looking at recipe recall, technique, consistency and how competitors perform under pressure.
That round will cut the field down to just three.
The final will then take place live at the Top 100 Most Influential Party, where the remaining bartenders will have 10 minutes to produce two original cocktails – one featuring a minimum of 30ml of Cointreau and the other a minimum of 30ml of Highland Park.
Cointreau and Highland Park will be provided on the back bar, while finalists will need to bring everything else required for their serves, including ingredients, garnishes, equipment and glassware. There will be no time extensions, with any unfinished drinks presented to the judges as they are when the clock runs out.
All three finalists will receive complimentary tickets to the Australian Bar Awards, where the 2026 Bartender of the Year will officially be crowned on Wednesday 16 September at Doltone House, Jones Bay Wharf.
With $5,000 cash, a serious bottle of whisky and one of the biggest titles in Australian bartending on the line, there’s plenty worth competing for this year.
