Hickens Hotel reopens in Melbourne with four-level pub

Melbourne’s historic pub on Russell and Little Collins has re-opened as Hickens Hotel, following a $12 million revamp. Now spanning four levels, the venue blends old heritage charm with modern pub culture.

Brought by vetted hospitality group Australian Venue Co, the venue offers something different on each level. On the ground floor, the Hickens front bar offers a classic Melbourne pub experience, while the carlton lounge, (Australia’s first Carlton Draught bar) features tank beer, retro interiors, a pool table, and vintage memorabilia.

Level one hosts the restaurant and bar, where reworked pub favourites meet share plates and drinks, designed for seamless social dining – while abe’s athletic hall on level two delivers the energy, with live sport, big screens, arcade games, karaoke, and private booths, a modern take on the classic sports bar. And for those late afternoon, sunset sips – the rooftop bar offers city views with a laid-back atmosphere.

Hickens offers a concise list of agaves, spritzes and classic cocktails – like the Berry Hibiscus Spritz – blending peach, wild berry, prosecco, and hibiscus, or for something with more of a kick the Spicy Watermelon Margarita features 100% blue agave tequila, triple Sec, agave, watermelon, lime, and chilli oil.

Pub venue manager – Giuseppe Lacava, says Hickens Hotel offers a lively aesthetic, leaning into quality Australian pub culture.

“Hickens is now the spot to go to in the city! We’ve dialled in on what makes a pub great leaning into a nostalgic and playful personality,” said Lacava.

Named after 19th-century publican and boxing champ Ebenezer “Abe” Hicken, the venue nods to its sporting roots while offering a fresh, refined location for Melbourne locals and visitors alike.

This Saturday is the official launch weekend – kicking things off with the Wallabies v Lions game, with doors open from 10am. The pub will be serving up breakfast beers, bacon & egg rolls as well as live entertainment pre -and post-game.
