Bar Bellamy is the first foray into venue ownership from partners in life and business, Oska and Dani Whitehart. The name comes from the French ‘bel ami’, meaning good or dear friend, and I have no doubt this bar and its staff will become that to the whole neighbourhood, and those who come from further afield.
The 45 self-serve drink taps include a curated list of craft beers, natural wines, house-made cocktails and also some non-alcoholic options. Guests simply need to grab a Buddy’s venue card and pre-load their desired amount to allow them to indulge in the self-serve beverage wall.
Myrtle is led by Chris Smith and Kirsty McAteer, who have relocated from South Australia after a two-year exploration of short-travelled produce and wine. They believe Australia’s small hands-on artisanal producers deserve to be showcased.
We sat down with Kayla recently for a behind-the-scenes look at the menu creation for the Speakeasy’s soon-to-open The Sanderson and the reopening of iconic Sydney bar Eau-de-Vie. In the ambitious project, both venues located at 285 George Street will open simultaneously in early May.
This idea of food and beer pairings underpins the concept for their recent expansion. While they have had a ‘brewery door’ on Wellington St since 2019, when the opportunity came up to take over the two adjoining spaces, Sandery saw an opportunity to fully realise his vision.
Led by the team that runs Sydney’s iconic Lansdowne Hotel, The Shaking Hand, known by locals as Shakes, is set to be Canberra’s next great live music establishment, taking over the Akuna Street basement site that housed Transit Bar until 2020.
What do you get when you take a couple of boys from the big smoke and send them down the coast to the Mornington Peninsula? A great combination of warm and friendly hospitality, an impressive range of beers and whiskey, classic American bar food, and toe-tappin’ country tunes from the jukebox.
Odd Culture Group to launch in Melbourne & Open ‘Odd Culture’ on Fitzroy’s Brunswick Street this May
The group will open a unique iteration of its Newtown venue, Odd Culture – a bar and bottle shop in one located on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy led by General Manager and Melbourne hospo legend, Gerry Nass.
There are three distinct spaces housed in a two-storey building on Newtown’s bustling King Street. The General Store, a 12-seater tropical speakeasy cocktail bar backing onto a cosy courtyard and an upstairs bar slated to open later in the year.
If there’s one song that you think of when you think of Maybe Sammy, it would have to be ‘Tequila’, complimented by the in-house brass. So it’s no real surprise that for the group’s fifth outing that they would open a Mexican Cantina with Tequila at the fore.
Vermuteria is an old-school European aperitif wine bar and delicatessen with a big focus on vermouth and sherry.
