Opened in June, 399 is the brainchild of experienced barkeep and operator Gary Beadle and Robin Jackson.  399 aims to be a true European style of venue “where all are welcome as long as they behave appropriately – the complete opposite to a trendy fashionable venue,” explains Beadle, “a place where you have generations of family’s hanging out together, where nobody cares about the label on your shirt, where service is warm and hearty at all times and, as cheesy as it sounds a venue where everyone knows your name.”

While the venue has no mixed drinks list, the duo has hired an experienced team to whip you up what ever you fancy to order. Open day and night you can order cracking Bloody Marys at 8am or homemade hot chocolate at 11pm without any fuss. A simple blackboard of small eats, soup and pastries is available in the morning, with a tasting plate on during the day. In the Beadle tells us that the menu is whatever the chef “thinks we should make that week with whatever’s fresh at the market… it’s good honest food matched with amazing wine.”

The venue itself is a long room with a bar down one side of the room and cosy booths down the other. The colours are warm chocolate and grey with lots of timber there are plenty of bar stools while the lights are colonial adding a warm glow. Sky lights which flood the room with sun light during the day service and out back is a little enclosed courtyard to take you away from the troubles of the outside world.
