Book Review: The Beer Lovers Guide to Australia

This book review was published in Bartender’s October 2010 issue

A collaboration from some of Australia’s best known writers and beer aficionados has produced a veritable Australian beer bible that will get you around your IPA’s, convince you on wheat and separate your Bitters from your Red Ales.

The book begins as it should with a history of beer. So often we ‘know’ so much about a subject only to find out we know so little and the Beer Lovers Guide sets you up to take first place next time you field a trivia question at the local pub. Importantly there is a list of the wide range of beer style available worldwide and some Australian examples that are available; what are the discernable differences between Pilsener styles, what is common among Australian Lagers and what the heck is a Munich Dunkel – and where do I find one?

With boutique beers now a prime menu item, wine like expertise is advised when making your next choice to save you looking like some mass-produced lager swilling yobo from the central parts of nowhere. The Food Pairing Chart is a great inclusion and will soon have you regaling with delight your selection next time you throw a hamburger on the BBQ – Amber Ale recommended, or pair up your mate’s meat pie with a Dry Stout.
