Wollongong’s new 70s inspired cocktail lounge: Mae Mabel

Mae Mabel
2/74 Kembla St, Wollongong
@maemabelbar

Mae Mabel; a cocktail lounge with a 70s living room feel (but a little bit fancier), serving classic cocktails and spinning a sleek and sexy mix of soul, funk and retro tunes.

The team behind Little Betty’s, Kiama have opened their second venue amongst the already thriving Wollongong nightlife scene of small bars, breweries and restaurants, neighbours to hidden-dive-bar-gem The Black Cockatoo and small-bar-veterans The Good Times Only crew.

Mae Mabel takes inspiration from the 70s Hollywood glam era, serving old forgotten classics in a dimly lit, comfortable living room set up. You’ll know the venue is open only by the signature orange light above the door; a small and cheeky nod to Wollongong’s Kembla Street. The team at Mae’s offer up a comfortable, approachable, but (a little bit) sophisticated opportunity to be whisked away to another world.

Where Little Betty’s gives its guests a seasonal spin on the classics (alongside an epic family-style dining experience), Mae Mabel goes straight to the source themselves. Cadillacs, Sazeracs, Vesper Martinis, and Kamikazes fill out the cocktail menu, while the wine list zones in on boutique bottles from family run vineyards and minimal intervention operations. The menu caters to anyone looking for a whole lot of fun with a Magnum of Rosé to a polished and elegant Nebbiolo.

If you’re feeling peckish, Mae’s offers a moreish cheese toastie (ricotta, fontina and provolone, or gruyere and blood orange chutney amongst the rotating mix), and if you’re feeling like a meal, they suggest visiting their local next-door, Pizzeria 50… and, then coming back for 3 more cocktails.

Isaac Warren (Santinos) heads the bar, while Ben Cocksedge (Bar Alto) leads the team in service – their expertise is focused on delivering excellent cocktails in a relaxed but fun environment. “We want you to sink into the centerpiece couch, or the sexy 10-seater booth and forget the time as the DJ spins a vinyl soundtrack to your cocktail-studded night.”
