After moving back to Australia from London in 2018, the dream for the pair was to open a bar. They just didn’t realise they would end up in Toowoomba for good.
The Maybe Group and Public Hospitality are joining forces to launch Mexican bar El Primo Sanchez in Paddington’s The Rose Hotel this December. The partnership involves the bar occupying the ground floor of the Paddington pub The Rose Hotel, which was recently purchased by Public Hospitality Group, headed by up-and-coming hotelier John Adgemis.
She started working in restaurants at home in France, but got properly interested in the industry once she arrived in Melbourne in 2017. After travelling around for a while she landed in Brisbane, starting at Canvas in Woolloongabba where, in her own words, she picked up some “bartending tips and rules – if there are any!”
You might have switched on the TV recently and seen a local reality dating show set in a restaurant. And you may well have noticed that the Bartender is a big fixture. Meet James Devlin a veteran bartender turned TV regular.
Mitchell currently hangs her hat at The 18th Amendment Bar in Geelong, and credits joining the team there with sparking her passion for hospitality.
“We have a really awesome mentoring program where all bartenders are paired with a senior member of staff. That senior member of staff is accountable for helping their buddy develop all the knowledge and skills required.”
Simon will be doing the usual Brand Ambassador activities with a guest bartending spot here and brand education there but he is mostly here to see Australia’s phenomenal hospitality industry again and spread the good work of Fords London Dry Gin.
The Australian winner was Thomas Opie from Births & Deaths in Wollongong NSW. He will now compete against other bartenders from all over the world in the global final of The Vero Bartender in Italy in October 22.
The Sydney bar scene is such a tight community, the support you receive and the friends you find is something I’ll never take for granted. It almost feels like extended family. As if you have your immediate relatives within your own company but then you’ve got your cousins down the road that you get to go visit for a knock off.
This award pays tribute to someone who has made a marked difference to the bar industry through their passion and dedication, and who has had an outsized, positive effect on the industry. This year’s recipient is Martin Lange, a Brisbane bar operator who has been in the hospitality industry for more than two decades.
