We all know him from the reality TV genre but George Calombaris has been a key player on the Melbourne eatery scene for some time. The Little Press Club and Cellar is the result of a complete revamp of his old venue, The Press Club. Calombaris wanted to create a totally new dining environment, “where anyone can drop in, at any time, to enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner, late supper or even a pre-dinner drink and meze before heading out.” The focus is on seasonal produce prepared in a modern Greek style and is complemented by a extensive wine list. You can also enjoy small private dinners in the exclusivity of the Cellar room.
The food is based on mezethakia, ‘little snacks’, so order a selection to share. The wine list is easy to navigate and helpfully suggests the style of wine you might be searching for; Full bodied, Aromatic or Textured and Weighty. If you’re an enthusiast then take advantage of the enomatic wine system and taste a 1945 vintage red from the Languedoc or enjoy a reserve Barolo, vintage 1989. With a solid mix of cocktails, beers and spirits there should be something to suit.
