Don’t miss these talks when the Indie Spirits Tasting rolls into Sydney Bar Week

In just a little over two weeks time, Sydney Bar Week begins for another year. And on the Sunday the 17th of September, the Indie Spirits Tasting rolls back into town for a third year.

Indie Spirits Tasting founder, David Spanton, says, “The Indie event has grown from strength to strength since we launched it at Frankie’s Pizza back in 2015. This year we are moving to a bigger and more glamorous venue – the beautiful Restaurant Hubert. This has afforded us the opportunity to host over 150 independent spirit brands, including 26 local Australian distilleries.

“What started out as an event for just a small selection of hard-to-find spirits has now exploded into one of the country’s largest tasting events. We have two things to thank for this – both the boom in local distilling and a new wave of thirsty consumers wanting to buy local and truly handmade craft products from around the world.”

Added to all of this is three complimentary panel discussions taking place upstairs in Restaurant Hubert’s soon to open aperitivo bar. Take a look at the topics below.

1.30pm – 2pm: Let’s bust some booze myths
How much sugar is in rum? Will eating the mezcal worm get you high? Have you got a spirits question that you’ve been too afraid to ask? Australian Bartender editor Sam Bygrave will play the role of the rube so you don’t have to and ask a panel of big booze brains to clear up some alcohol myths.

2.30pm – 3pm: Sustainability – the ethics of buying artisanal
Small is beautiful, right? You want craft, you want rare, and you’ll pay top dollar to get it — but where does the money go? Does making spirits the traditional way mean ruling out development? Is the spirits industry destroying the environment?

3.30pm – 4pm: Here’s a crazy idea — let’s open a distillery!
Ever thought to yourself, you know what, I want to make my own booze? Join four experts who have done just that and hear their advice for building your own spirits start up.
