Raising a Glass to Chartreuse

Some spirits are brands.
Some are categories.
And then there is Chartreuse.

A liqueur wrapped in mystery, history, ritual and flavour, Chartreuse stands as one of the most iconic and fascinating liquids ever created. Produced by the Carthusian monks for centuries, its story stretches back to the year 1605 when Francois Hannibal d’Estrees, Marshal of King Henri IV’s artillery, presented the monks with an ancient manuscript known as the “Elixir of Long Life.”

That moment in time would become one of the most important chapters in spirits history.

Every year on the 16th of May, bartenders and spirits lovers around the world celebrate 16.05, raising a glass to the manuscript, the monks and a recipe that would evolve into one of the world’s most legendary liqueurs.

More than 400 years later, the recipe remains protected by only two monks.

Made from 130 herbs, plants and botanicals, Chartreuse continues to inspire bartenders across every level of hospitality, from classic cocktail bars to modern experimental venues. It is a spirit that rewards curiosity. For some, the journey begins with the unmistakable intensity of Green Chartreuse. For others, it starts with the softer honeyed spice of Yellow Chartreuse. Either way, it rarely ends with just one drink.

The beauty of Chartreuse is in its versatility.

You might enjoy it ice cold over ice with a fresh wedge of lemon. You might build a refreshing Chartreuse Mule. Or perhaps winter calls for something richer, like a Verte Chaud, the legendary combination of Green Chartreuse and hot chocolate that somehow feels both comforting and dangerously indulgent at the same time.

Then come the cocktails.

The Last Word remains one of the greatest equal parts cocktails ever created. Bright, herbal, fresh and perfectly balanced, combining Green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur, Martin Miller’s Gin and fresh lime, shaken ice cold and garnished with a maraschino cherry.

Then there is the deep elegance of the Bijou. The tropical spice of the Chartreuse Swizzle. The complexity of the Alaska. The historic character of the Champs Elysees. Or the bold herbal lift that Chartreuse can bring to modern riffs and contemporary classics behind the bar.

For bartenders, Chartreuse is more than an ingredient. It is a conversation starter. A history lesson. A challenge. A flavour unlike anything else in the world.

And perhaps that is why it continues to hold such a special place in cocktail culture today.

So, whether you are behind the bar, sitting at the bar or sharing a drink with friends after service, take a moment to raise a glass to one of the oldest and most extraordinary liqueurs ever created.

To the monks.
To the manuscript.
To the mystery.

And to 1605.

Santé.
