Freda’s is set to reopen in Chippendale’s Abercrombie hotel on 24 April, but not in the same way as before. Freda’s café will be transforming into Bar Freda’s. The highly anticipated open has been brewing since 2020 when they were forced to close Freda’s Bar and nightclub due to redevelopment.
With the Darlinghurst location opening a few months later, Cafe Freda’s, has since been forced to close in December 2024 due to yet another redevelopment, paving the way for the return of Bar Freda’s in Chippendale, a serendipitous rebirth.
Owners David Abram and Carla Uriarte have been working alongside the hospitality group Solotel, working towards the reimagination of Freda’s and reinstating her in her former glory. Solotel will be taking creative direction for the historic late-night venue, the Abercrombie, beginning in April 2025, which will include regular Club Freda’s nights.
“We’ve cherry picked all the drinks we love, with a focus on fun and nothing too heavy. Three different Margaritas. Easy drinking wines from small Australian and European producers. A rotating specialty taps from our friends at Grifter. Slushies using high quality and specialty ingredients. Cerveza on tap, that you can make into a Michelada. Lots of great boutique non-alcoholic options including Club Mate. Something for everyone,” said Uriarte.
The cocktail menu will feature classics with a twist, like the Freda’s Martini with vodka, vermouth, and pickle brine. The Negroni featuring pineapple Campari and pomelo vermouth. Three margaritas will be available to order, like the Tommy’s, the spicy with mezcal, mandarin and habanero, and a Margarita using all locally sourced ingredients that includes Black Snake Agave, rosella, and smoked salt.
With a rotating list of wines from small Australian and European producers, Bar Freda’s is set to make waves in Sydney’s late-night bar scene.
Bar Freda’s and Club Freda’s at The Abercrombie will both commence in April 2025.
