Owned by brother and sister team Elizabeth and Frank Samia, Alria is a waterside wine bar that’s all about good booze, food, and tunes without leaving a large hole in your hip pocket. Mikee Collins (formally Ash St Cellar and Gazebo) is behind the venue set up and has also put together the wine list that ranges between $38 to $130. There are twelve reasonable options by the glass (seven are under a ‘tener) with plenty of European flavour to go with the Spanish, Middle Eastern and Moroccan influenced share food.
A handful of brews and a select cocktail list – that Collins tells us is “classics all the way” – complement the venue’s core offering. The space itself, designed by Caroline Chokare, offers warm Mediterranean tones, stained American oak furniture, polished slate floors, Moroccan tiles running the length of the bar and funky wallpaper on the ceiling, down the back wall and behind the banquette. Seating spills out onto the wharf and being north-west facing summer afternoons are going to be busy for this joint.
