For many, the 80s was a cultural and musical peak. Disco, rollerblades, piña coladas, what more could you want? Inspired by this thriving wave of self-expression and inclusion, a group of bartenders from Brisbane’s leading watering holes have joined forces to bring this energy back, today announcing their exciting new pop-up dubbed The 86 Club.
Follow the call to the disco ball! The inaugural free event will be held on Sunday, May 7th at Black Bear Lodge, a much-loved space known for its welcoming nature and immaculate song selectors.
Noticing an absence of similar events, The 86 Club aims to blur the line between a traditional cocktail pop-up, and a club night. Reimagining five of the 80s cocktails we know and love (the humble Shandy, Sex on the Beach and Miami Vice for example), the event is backed by a lively soundtrack of house and disco, curated by local DJ collective QUIVR.
The brainchild of Andie Bulley (Savile Row), Blade Deegan (The Gresham), Liam Murphy and Martin McConnell (both Frog’s Hollow Saloon), together the group share an impressive rap sheet of accolades and venues and aims to use this combined expertise to conceptualise the era with quality ingredients and modern techniques, working with leading brands such as Bacardi, Bombay Sapphire, Grey Goose, Patron, Marionette and Range Brewing to bring this to life.
The 86 Club is named after the common hospitality term “86”, which is used to represent something that is no longer available. With that in mind, the group encourages guests to ‘86’ all their problems at the door, and revel in the vibrancy of the 80s.
