Mary’s has been one of the most talked about openings of this year, with the venue getting rave reviews for their food. But this pub with some good nosh is not just a restaurant. We sat down with Kenny Graham to find out a little about the venue’s story.
The Sydney CBD bar revival is showing no signs of letting up, with a new bar and restaurant, York Trading Co, opening up on York Street.
Experienced Perth bartender James Connolly has moved on from his role at Perth’s Rockpool Bar & Grill, to open a new bar called Enrique’s. ”It’s a Spanish-themed pop-up bar in Mount Lawley,” said Connolly. “And like the bars of Barcelona we will be making the gin and tonic king,” he said.
So often the bars we write about look overseas for their inspiration, which is not to say that’s a bad thing. But it’s refreshing to see a new bar that looks no further than the outback for its inspiration.
Old Growler isn’t such a new bar anymore, having opened up in the first few months of this year. Things are cracking along well and recently hired ops manager Jordan Blackman (also an Australian Bartender Bar Awards Rookie of the Year nominee) has put in a new cocktail list to go with the Young Henry’s beer on tap.

There’s a new bar just five weeks away in Woolloomooloo. We stopped by Riley Street Garage to chat to the Parlour Group’s Bay & Bobby to get an update on the build.
Red Bull Music Academy’s magazine has a great story on the storied old Melbourne nightclub, Honkytonks. As the article by Nick Connellan points out, in the spot where Honkytonks once resided there is now an Indian restaurant, called Tonka: “It’s typical of the city: new, upmarket, pricey. Totally hidden unless you know it’s there. Achingly cool, then.”
We’ve been talking about jazz age drinks for years now — but where has been the jazz? New Perth bar, The Laneway Lounge, looks set to rectify all that.
