Despite what the latest season of Underbelly and Sydney’s tabloids will have you believe Kings Cross is trying to clean up its act. One particular area that has seen a major transformation is Llankelly Place, perhaps Sydney’s first real attempt at creating a Melbourne style laneway.

Dan Woolley and his new company, Edge Group, has pulled together some of Sydney’s top bar stars to breath some new life into Surry Hills’ old ‘Mars Lounge’ re-branding the bar as ‘The Black Boater’.
There’s just a week left of our 30 Bars in 30 Days odyssey, and as the journey approaches its end, I’m thinking our final lists will be as much about the bars we didn’t visit as the ones we managed to reach. 30 is a fraction of the bars this city has to offer, and as we hit the home straight, we keep hearing of new places popping up, exciting developments at old favourites and enough bar action to keep us going – well, all the way through to next March.
Now once in a while something special graces bar scene becoming an instant classic. Shady Pines Saloon might just be one of those places. Is it the cocktails? Is it the food? Is the über-chic design? Not on your Nelly!
Ravál located at the top of the stairs above Sydney’s historic Macquarie Hotel (or ‘The Mac’ as it is popularly known) is named after Barcelona’s infamous nightspot El Ravál; an area bordering La Rambla know for its cabaret, nightclubs, and more lascivious businesses of the night.
Admittedly wine releases aren’t what we usually focus on in these pages, but when we got the call from Nathan Cairns about his family wine label ‘Bye’s’ we thought we’d make an exception. Nathan, for those of you old enough to remember, was one of Sydney’s original cocktail bartenders who set up Longrain’s bar in 1999. Furthermore, Nathan was featured in Bartender magazine for being second runner-up in Bartender of the Year (while at Middle Bar) at the inaugural Australian Bar Awards in 2001.
The Deconstructed team who previously oversaw the revamp of the Shelbourne Hotel in Sydney’s CBD have embarked upon a new venture; the City Hotel or just ‘The City’ as they envisage the venue becoming known. The launch event for step one of the project is set for tomorrow night.

Eden Bar and Restaurant, has grown into the site which previous held @Work Bar and Restaurant, just off Sydney’s Martin Place. Gone is the mildly amusing name (at least it was the first time you used it) and instead you’ll find “a garden of relaxation in the heart of the city.”
