The annual World’s 50 Best Bars list was announced at a gala ceremony in London overnight, and hosted by UK television personality Mark Durden-Smith. This year was the 10th year of the World’s 50 Best Bars list, with 510 voters spread across the globe, voting anonymously and corralled by a number of regional chairs. On the evening they also announced that the World’s 50 Best Bars will be hosted in Singapore come 2021.

London was the city that dominated the list this, with 10 bars from the UK capital earning a spot, with New York the next most awarded (with 6 entries on the list) and followed by rising cocktail destination, Singapore, with five entries. Across the list, some 26 cities from 20 countries were recognised this year.

The World’s Best Bar this year went to London’s Dandelyan, which landed at number two last year. It’s a nice way for owner of the bar, Ryan Chetiyawardana, to cap off the last four years of Dandelyan, as he has announced that he will close the concept and relaunch the venue as something new (a move which he has performed before, when shuttered the successful White Lyan to make way or a new project).

The Industry Icon award this year went to John Lermayer, the American bartender behind Florida’s Sweet Liberty who passed away earlier this year at the too young age of 45.

Only one Australian bar made it into the top 50 this year, the mainstay of Australian bars onn the list, Melbourne’s Black Pearl, which landed at number 30 and took out the award for the Best Bar in Australasia.
