Bar 1880 pays homage to the old headquarters of the current affairs publication the Bulletin Magazine. Tucked away on Bulletin Place, the new two-level cocktail bar features both cosy indoor and laneway dining experiences with nods to the past.

The venue is the brainchild of Harry Morton who has travelled the world through his sailing management company, with his experiences being documented in a little black book full of notes.

Morton’s team is made up of hospitality veterans including French duo Didier Nahum and Alex Raclet (French bartender of the year in 2011). Alex cuts no corners with everything made in-house, with fresh produce being selected daily to craft inventive signature cocktails such as the Lock Me Up, which is an old-fashioned style cocktail using sous vide banana and white cacao butter-washed cognac, chestnut and fino sherry.

“With 1880, I was inspired by the iconic history of the building and ‘rescuing’ some lesser-known cocktails for people to rediscover,” says Morton.
