There’s a certain smell to Bourbon Street in July. It’s there in the afternoon, when the asphalt is cooking from the sweltering heat. It’s there when you leave the hotel lobby at seven o’clock at night and the sun is still out; it’s there still, in the morning, after they’ve sprayed the streets with water and soap and the bubbles are left baking in the gutters in the morning sun.
So we may be nursing sore heads from a great awards dinner — and a very large Juniperlooza party afterwards — but here is a full list of the winners from last night. A real highlight of this year’s ‘Tales of the Cocktail’ was Dave Wondrich’s take on the History of the Modern American Saloon. Previously, the only time I had been significantly injected with such important perspective was after reading the first ‘Mixologist Journal’ when I truly discovered what could be called the origin of the species; the Punch.
Australian bars were overlooked at the 2009 Tales of the Cocktail awards held in New Orleans at the popular cocktail festival last week. Last year, Melbourne’s 1806 was honoured with the prize for the World’s Best Cocktail List but this year it was pipped by The Merchant Hotel of Belfast in Northern Ireland. This hotel also scored gongs for Best Hotel Bar and Best Drinks Selection.
