Rather than looking to the southern states, or further ashore to Europe or America, The Gresham, on the site of a heritage listed building in Queen Street Brisbane, is a new bar deeply rooted in its place: Queensland.
Well it’s an opening we’ve been waiting for all year and now the time has come. Papa Jack’s, the new bar from Marco and Emily Nunes (one half of the four owners who set up the influential Brisbane bar, Canvas) is open for business.
Brisbane has welcomed a new bar, described as a “counter-culture whiskey lounge”, to Fortitude Valley. Called Sabotage Social, the focus is on top quality drinks without the attitude that sometimes goes along with it, according to co-owner Bradzilla Cochrane.
Well, what Brisbane’s rockabilly scene has lost, their whisky drinkers have certainly gained. Owners Asa Boardman, Trent Goodwin, and Martin Lange (Sling) have turned what was once a rockabilly hairdresser into a bastion of whisky in the heart of the West End.
